Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest is the leading charity in East London supporting people with mental health problems and working to improve wellbeing.
This is a vital time to join the Welfare Rights Team of Mind CHWF as the COVID-19 pandemic and continued trajectory of government welfare policy have seen many more people pushed into financial uncertainty.
In addition to delivering front-line support to service users, team members will contribute to Mind’s activist efforts going forward, by supporting the training and development of Peer workers and by feeding into campaigning efforts around welfare reform on a wider scale. As such, the successful applicant will be involved in advocating on behalf of disabled adults and adults with additional support needs both locally as well as on a national level to fight discrimination and inequality resulting from government policy.
The successful candidate will support the Welfare Rights Team in delivering a Welfare Rights Advice Service to adults with disabled adults and adults with mental health conditions in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest. Advice and casework will be offered both face-to-face and over the phone, with the successful candidate maintaining a caseload of their own clients with whom they will work long-term to support in claiming benefits. They will work with clients both in the community and in NHS settings. They will also input on campaigning being done by Mind in an effort to push for welfare reforms and improvements to government policy.
To be considered, applicants must demonstrate a passion for social justice and for tackling discrimination and inequality, particularly around mental health. Experience or understanding of the needs of disabled people is a must, as is the ability to engage in an appropriate and understanding manner with adults with additional support needs.
This role involves advising mental health service users to support them in claiming welfare benefits, and as such the successful applicant will demonstrate both compassion and the commitment to advocate on behalf of those who feel unable to do so without support.
Excellent written and verbal communications are required, as well as the ability to prioritise and maintain your own caseload of clients.
